HP Laptop 15 da0022ca - Unable to Boot from USB Drive/SD Card Reader
Vendor: HP
Product: HP Laptop 15 da0022ca
Model: da0022ca
Year Manufactured: 2018
CPU: Intel Core i3-8130U
BIOS Firmware Version: F.04
Bought this 2 yr old model for under CAD$400 which has 8th Gen Intel Core technology that supports DDR4 RAM with higher capacity.
The first issue I found in Internet about HP laptop is often it cannot boot from USB device, and card reader, which seems to experience by many earlier models. This issue is encountered in my laptop that sold in 2018-2019 as well.
Further testing found that booting from the build-in SD card reader is not available as well.
The BIOS's boot order obviously is buggy, and don't allow to boot from both USB device, and build-in SD card reader
Following is the procedure to follow in order to make bootable USB thumb drive. These guideline could be applicable to other laptop models as well as these are general firmware programmer knowledge gap on various technologies and hardware.
Option 1: BIOS Firmware
Instruction: Upgrade BIOS firmware to latest version
Initially version of BIOS firmware that comes with the new computer is always old. For da0022ca model, it has a bug that doesn't recognize USB device and build-in card reader as boot up device, even the BIOS menu feature is enabled.
For HP Laptop 15 da0022ca, BIOS firmware version F.44 supports both boot up from USB and build-in card reader.
Option 2: Secure Boot
Intel URL: https://www.intel.ca/content/www/ca/en/support/articles/000006942/boards-and-kits/desktop-boards.html
Instruction: Set Secure Boot to off, or disable
The "Secure Boot key" that is considered as Windows Hardware Certification Kit (WHCK) often causes some confusion to BIOS firmware developer. The intention is to prevent hacked OS from booting by confirming it has WHCK status. Often time, recovery disk, Linux OS, Windows Recovery disk, etc. confused BIOS firmware developer and blocked either USB drive or build-in card reader from booting.
For my HP Laptop 15 da0022ca, once Secure Boot is disabled, it will prompt for a 4-digit key to confirm this change during next reboot.
Option 3: Legacy Boot Device Compatibility
Instruction: Set Legacy Boot Device to on, or enable
Some OS, or recovery disk are not using EFI compatible format, which is called legacy OS design (partition plus file system layout). Therefore, if this feature is disabled in BIOS, then the USB or card reader OS won't be allow to boot, if only EFI is enabled.
Option 4: Fast Boot
Instruction: Set Fast Boot off, or disable
In certain laptop model, the Fast Boot option have a bug that won't allow to boot from USB
Option 5: USB 3 Compatibility
Instruction: Plug the USB device into other USB port
In certain laptop model which contains USB 2 and 3 ports, the BIOS could has bug that USB 3 port does not support USB boot. Test with every USB ports in the laptop, by starting with USB 2 ports
