Honda/Acura: Shift Knob Stuck at Parking Gear
Listing out troubleshooting process when shift knob stuck at P (Parking) gear for Honda or Acura.
1. Press on BRAKE pedal - check whether rear brake light turns on
5. Test battery when cranking (starting) car - make sure it is above 11V
6. If needs to drive the car immediately, and no time to diagnose the issue, see Solution 6 as temporary workaround
1. Press on BRAKE pedal - check whether rear brake light turns on
- If no light, see Solution 1
- If low fluid, see Solution 2
- If switch doesn't turn on brake light on pressing, see Solution 3
5. Test battery when cranking (starting) car - make sure it is above 11V
- If low battery, see Solution 5
6. If needs to drive the car immediately, and no time to diagnose the issue, see Solution 6 as temporary workaround
Solution 1 - No brake light
1. Replace fuse for the brake light, if fuse burned
2. The brake light fuse control the gear locking solenoid
3. Temporary workaround - connects a wire between the 2 wire on the fuse
Solution 2 - Low brake fluid
1. Fill up brake fluid to minimum level
2. It will be DOT3 or DOT4 fluid
3. There is a transmission control solenoid that indirectly control the gear locking solenoid
4. Temporary workaround - Install new brake pad, so that it push some brake fluid back into the reservoir
Solution 3 - shift control solenoid malfunction
1. Disconnect and remove entire solenoid from car
2. Clean it with brake cleaner, air intake cleaner, gas, or just use compressed air to blow it
3. Make sure the mesh screen is not clog
4. Connect ground to the body, and touch each pin with 12V to ensure the solenoid is good
5. If solenoid doesn't work (no clicking sound), then get a used unit from junk yard
Solution 3 - shift control solenoid malfunction
1. Disconnect and remove entire solenoid from car
2. Clean it with brake cleaner, air intake cleaner, gas, or just use compressed air to blow it
3. Make sure the mesh screen is not clog
4. Connect ground to the body, and touch each pin with 12V to ensure the solenoid is good
5. If solenoid doesn't work (no clicking sound), then get a used unit from junk yard
Solution 4 - Brake switch malfunction
1. Replace brake switch
2. Temporary workaround - connects a wire between the 2 wire on the brake switch
Solution 5 - Low car battery
1. Charge car battery
2. Jump start the car with another battery, or from another car
Solution 6 - Temporary unlock shift lock
1. Look next to the shift gear area for a slot or rectangular cover
2. If there is a plastic cover, pry open the plastic with flat head screw driver
3. Insert car key into the hole, and you will be able to shift the gear out from P
4. Move it to N gear, so that you can start the car and drive it
Solution 5 - Low car battery
1. Charge car battery
2. Jump start the car with another battery, or from another car
Solution 6 - Temporary unlock shift lock
1. Look next to the shift gear area for a slot or rectangular cover
2. If there is a plastic cover, pry open the plastic with flat head screw driver
3. Insert car key into the hole, and you will be able to shift the gear out from P
4. Move it to N gear, so that you can start the car and drive it
